I don't normally post songs that I don't like. As you all know my most used word on this site is 'favourite'. Well, I have lots!
Tonight I listened to half of the new Will.I.Am & Nicki Minaj single Check It Out. My poor pop heart sank another bit. The first thing you hear is the sample of the Buggles Video Killed The Radio Star which lasts throughout the entire song. That song was the first single I ever bought many moons ago and have always been a bit embarrassed by that fact but it was made better that I loved so much of the other music Trevor Horn created and produced.
Will.I.Am knows well that a catchy sample of a song that is older than his targeted audience, a catchphrase or a very basic chorus all sell records. All three elements are used in Check It Out. He has become a sort of not as good as Timbaland over the past few years though I did like Meet Me Halfway last year.
I wish the day will come that there is even a bit of originality in pop music again. I think it's why I have less interest in chart music as the months go by.
It also means I am getting older. The reality is that I'm not meant to like most of the music in the charts. The charts will be and always have been a generational thing. It is the reason that my parents weren't besotted with Madonna, Boy George and George Michael in 1983. I'm sure my grandparents felt the same about the Beatles and Elvis.
Pop music works because it appeals to music fans in a specific period of their life. The music is just a part, but an important part, of growing up and being young. Some bloggers tend to write in a negative way if someone like Mariah, Whitney or even Madonna don't get to number one with each of their new single or album releases. The fact that when an artist like Madonna or Kylie still charts even within the top twenty that this is a fantastic achievement. The older fans won't keep a star in the charts forever, that singer has to to also build a new generation of fans something that a lot of the 80's stars have continued to do so. The internet has made us all critics, some good, some bad. It's a constant open forum and I love it.
So here's a song that I do not like but appreciate all those who do! I also think that Will.I.Am may be coming out with that single cover.

The Only Girl
It looks like Cheryl Cole is going to be number one this coming Sunday in the UK with her dreadful new single Promise This. Rihanna will also be in the top ten with Only Girl (In The World). I liked it the first time I heard it a few weeks ago. It is of course a song that will get annoying in a few weeks but for now I still like it. With her appearance on X Factor this coming weekend Rihanna should be number one the week after. I do find it a bit depressing that songs from X Factor dominate the UK chart from September to December but in reality they should be dominating the chart even more so. Maybe it's because people are downloading the contestants songs and those songs don't count on the official chart.
I do think that the album cover for Loud, pictured above, makes Rihanna look white. The image of her may look different when it's all over HMV next week or maybe it was just my first impression and that stuck.
